StyroCycle Supports Zero Waste Festival with Expanded Polystyrene Recycling Service

This past weekend, StyroCycle provided crucial EPS (expanded polystyrene) recycling at the Zero Waste Festival held at Federation Square. Our presence at the dedicated “Recycling Centre” allowed festival-goers to drop off clean EPS packaging, ensuring it could be recycled responsibly and transformed into new, sustainable products.

Expanded Polystyrene: 100% Recyclable and its role in a Circular Economy

One of the most important messages StyroCycle aims to share is that clean EPS packaging is 100% recyclable. However, polystyrene is sometimes misunderstood as a difficult material to recycle. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Clean EPS can be easily processed and transformed into high-value products. These products range from building insulation, which enhances the energy efficiency of homes, to durable outdoor furniture like park benches. This type of recycling reduces the need for virgin raw materials, lowers carbon emissions, and contributes to the sustainability of various industries.

Why Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)  is Perfect for Recycling

Clean expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging is ideal for recycling. It is composed of 98% air and 2% plastic, and is incredibly lightweight but also durable. Its structure allows it to be compacted easily, reducing its volume by up to 90% before processing. Once compressed, the material can be reprocessed into raw materials used to manufacture products across multiple industries.

By recycling EPS, StyroCycle ensures that fewer raw materials are needed for manufacturing. This aligns with the principles of a circular economy.

How EPS Fits into the Circular Economy

The Zero Waste Festival focused on reducing waste and reusing resources, which perfectly aligns with StyroCycle’s mission. EPS can be recycled into a range of products. One of the main products that this plastic packaging is recycled into is energy-efficient building insulation, which helps reduce heating and cooling costs. This is one example of how recycling EPS supports the circular economy by keeping materials in use for as long as possible, reducing both waste and the environmental impact of plastic production.

StyroCycle’s Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability

StyroCycle were thrilled to be invited, for the second year running to the Zero Waste Festival, offering an EPS recycling service that diverted polystyrene from landfill. This is part of our broader mission to support responsible recycling practices and promote a greener future. We encourage everyone to recycle their clean EPS packaging at designated collection points to contribute to a more sustainable world.
