Commercial EPS Recycling for Australian Businesses

Are you in need of a commercial EPS recycling solution? If your business regularly receives deliveries cushioned in polystyrene foam packaging — whether you’re a retailer, wholesaler, produce supplier or building contractor —expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging is likely accumulating faster than you can deal with it. Here’s a practical guide to managing it responsibly, and what role StyroCycle plays.

StyroCycle acts as a connector between businesses and EPSA member recyclers across Australia. If you reach out with a commercial recycling enquiry, we’ll point you to the right recycler in your region — quickly and at no cost to you. The recycler handles the commercial arrangement directly. Find a nearby location at styrocycle.com.au or email info@styrocycle.com.au.

Understanding EPS in the Australian Business Context

Around 95% of EPS packaging used in Australia arrives with imported goods — electronics, appliances, and products of all kinds that require robust protection during international shipping. That packaging does an important job: the drop protection EPS provides is, in many cases, irreplaceable. Alternatives that have been tested — particularly for larger items — have consistently failed to match EPS on impact absorption.

Which means EPS packaging isn’t going away. It’s a practical necessity for the safe importation and distribution of a huge range of goods. The question for businesses isn’t whether to use it, but what to do with it once it’s served its purpose.

StyroCycle’s Role: Connector, Not Contractor

It’s worth being clear about what StyroCycle is and isn’t. As a not-for-profit operating under the EPSA program, StyroCycle’s role is to make connections — between businesses that have EPS waste and the licensed Australian recyclers equipped to process it.

When a commercial enquiry comes in, we identify the most appropriate EPSA member recycler in that region and connect the two parties directly. The commercial arrangement — collection frequency, fees, logistics — is agreed between the business and the recycler. StyroCycle doesn’t hold contracts or manage collections. We’re the matchmaker.

Why Diverting Business EPS From Landfill Makes Sense

Reduce Waste Disposal Costs

EPS is volumetrically enormous relative to its weight — you’re often paying skip bin or waste removal fees essentially for air. Diverting EPS to a recycler reduces the volume going into your general waste stream and can genuinely cut disposal costs, particularly for retailers, appliance dealers and distributors with high packaging throughput.

Contribute to Real Sustainability Outcomes

ESG reporting is increasingly standard for Australian businesses. A documented EPS diversion program gives you a concrete, quantifiable metric — the kind of tangible action that carries weight far more than broad environmental commitments. The recycled material becomes Australian-made insulation, construction fill and mouldings — a genuine circular outcome.

Support Australian Industry

All EPSA member recyclers are Australian businesses that have invested substantially in modern recycling technology. When your EPS is collected through an EPSA-connected arrangement, it’s processed domestically and remanufactured locally — keeping value in the Australian economy.

How to Get a Commercial EPS Recycling Arrangement

  • Email info@styrocycle.com.au with your business name, location and an indication of your EPS volume and type
  • StyroCycle will identify the nearest suitable EPSA member recycler and make the introduction
  • You liaise directly with the recycler to agree on collection frequency, logistics and any applicable fees

Alternatively, use the StyroCycle map to find a drop-off point near your premises — for businesses with smaller or infrequent volumes, self-delivery may be the most practical option.

⚠️ Heads up on fees: Drop-off is free for occasional quantities up to a car boot, ute load, small to medium van or small trailer (max 8ft × 5ft). For regular commercial collections or larger volumes, fees are set by and paid directly to the participating EPSA member recycler — not to StyroCycle.

Preparing EPS for Collection or Drop-Off

Regardless of collection or drop-off, EPS must be:

  • Clean and free from food residue, liquid or organic material
  • Free from all tape, labels, strapping or plastic film
  • White only — coloured EPS is not accepted
  • Free from contamination including paint, cement, concrete and dirt
  • Not Expanded Polyethylene (EPE) foam — the soft, flexible wave-patterned material is a different product and not accepted

Which Types of Businesses Generate the Most EPS?

  • Retailers and appliance dealers receiving regular stock in EPS packaging
  • Wholesalers and distributors handling imported goods
  • Grocery stores, fishmongers and greengrocers using EPS produce boxes
  • Builders and construction companies generating clean EPS offcuts on site
  • Manufacturers that use or produce EPS in their operations
  • Logistics and warehousing operators handling high volumes of packaged goods

Where Is Commercial Collection Available?

EPSA member recyclers connected through StyroCycle currently operate across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania. Availability of commercial collection in your area depends on which recyclers are operating nearby and their appetite for commercial pickup arrangements — this varies by region and by recycler.

The best first step is always to reach out via info@styrocycle.com.au with your details. We’ll give you an honest picture of what’s available in your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is StyroCycle responsible for the commercial recycling arrangement?

No. StyroCycle’s role is to connect your business with the right EPSA member recycler. The commercial relationship — including collection schedules, fees and logistics — is handled directly between you and the recycler. StyroCycle doesn’t hold contracts or manage collections.

Is there a cost for commercial collection?

For regular or large-scale commercial volumes, fees apply — set by and paid to the EPSA member recycler directly. Smaller or infrequent volumes may qualify for free drop-off at a community location. Contact the recycler for specifics.

We generate EPS offcuts in manufacturing. Does StyroCycle cater for that?

Yes — clean, uncontaminated white EPS offcuts are accepted. Email info@styrocycle.com.au and we’ll connect you with the most appropriate recycler for your situation.

Can we get documentation for our sustainability reporting?

Depending on the recycler, collection records or diversion documentation may be available. Raise this when you make contact with the recycler — requirements and availability vary.
